TnJ 549 (6/25/15)

Special session: Best of 2015 (so far), roll up and enjoy!

-HOUR ONE-

MIKE FRANK and FRIENDS - $1000  (2015 a Doorway Beyond)

Hard to go wrong with a Hammond B3 and a 1971 Neve console.

AJ GHENT BAND – Keep on Working > Keep on Working Jam  (2015 Live at Terminal West CD/DVD)

Sacred steel, laying it on thick and groovy.

ALABAMA SHAKES – Don’t Wanna Fight

Not afraid to experiment with the “sound” of their second album.

PIMPS of JOYTIME – Dank Janky

Brooklyn-based garage funk with some great guests, including Ivan Neville.

STORMING the BEACHES with LOGOS in HAND – Gorillas in the Sky  (2015 Southwick Howls)

Two years in the making, this album does Santa Fe proud.

BRIGHT LIGHT SOCIAL HOUR – Sweet Madelene > Slipstream  (2015 Space Is Still the Place)

This Austin band works the atmospheric aesthetic better than most.

-HOUR TWO-

UMPHREY’S McGEE – I Want You [She’s So Heavy]  (2015 the London Session)

Recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios in London.  Great cover of a great song.

MY MORNING JACKET – Only Memories Remain  (2015 the Waterfall)

Still kings of the ethereal, and banking on it heavily this time around.

DAWES – Things Happen  (2015 All Your Favorite Bands)

This album sounds more “plugged in” than earlier efforts, to their benefit.

DREW HOLCOMB and the NEIGHBORS – Avalanche  (2015 Medicine)

Folky singer-songwriterism that is neither too sparse nor too jangly.

CHRIS STAPLETON – Might As Well Get Stoned  (2015 Traveller)

This “country” artist is way too cool to be heard on many country stations.

GOV’T MULE w/ JOHN SCOFIELD and MIKE BARNES – Afro Blue  (2015 Sco-Mule, 9/23/99 the Roxy, Atlanta, GA)

Excellent archival release.  That it went unreleased for so many years is a tragedy.  Haynes and Scofield doing what they do best: ripping it up.

PHISH AMSTERDAM '97 BOX SET

PHISH - Amsterdam

Paradiso – Amsterdam, Netherlands 2/17/97, 7/1/97, 7/2/97

Release date:  6/16/15 JEMP Records

On February 17, 1997 Phish first played Paradiso, a converted former church turned rock-club/cultural center with a capacity of about 1500. Over the next four months, Phish logged three breakthrough shows at this historic venue where the intimate setting pushed the music to new heights again and again.  From the Soul Shakedown party opener and fluid, psychedelic improvisation-clinic-of-a-set II (Down With Disease > Carini > Taste > Down With Disease) on 2/17/97 to the “back of the worm” Ghost opener, Reba and another peak transcendent Set II [Fish Keyboard Jam > Timber (Jerry) > Bathtub Gin > Cities] on 7/1/97 through the Mike’s Groove Sandwich and must-hear Stash > Llama > Wormtown Jam plus the double encore of 7/2/97, these three shows spread over 8 CD’s comprise some of the most experimental music Phish ever played.

The three shows on the Amsterdam box, the only Phish shows to-date at Paradiso, combine to deliver the full impact of a shared peak experience in an exotic locale seamlessly integrated and sizzling with creative intensity.  The shows were recorded by Paul Languedoc to multitrack tape, mixed by Jon Altschiller and mastered by Fred Kevorkian. Pick up this set and prepare for transport to the canals of Amsterdam…to the back of the worm.  Enjoy!
