WARREN HAYNES ANSWERS QUESTIONS

It's not the first time (and hopefully won't be the last), but I had some questions after last Wednesday's Gov't Mule show at the Kiva Auditorium in Albuquerque.  And Warren was kind enough to give me some answers.

TnJ: I noticed your guitar tech was regularly switching guitars and I got to wondering, do you have any special "Warren tunings?" I know Joni Mitchell had a few. Or did they just keep going out of tune because of the altitude? 

WH: I carry around 25 guitars on the road- mostly for tuning reasons. In addition to keeping several guitars in standard tuning I have ones that are delegated to Open G, Open A, Open E7, Drop D, Drop C, and 2 different Open C tunings, in addition to the Firebirds which are tuned down a half step. Normally if I switch guitars it’s to use one in a different tuning.

TnJ: Is that the first time Tom Waits "Get Behind the Mule" was played? I can't believe how great the arrangement was, and how much it fit right into the Mule vibe.

WH: No, we’ve played it quite a bit and the arrangement changes every night. I thought it was really good that night.

TnJ: I hear rumors you are joining up with some other guitar slingers later this year. Touring? An album? 

WH: Working on a solo album at present. Hoping to release later this year and begin a tour before that.

PHISH "ROUND ROOM" ON VINYL

Phish Heads! On Friday, February 2nd, the band will release "Round Room" on vinyl for the first time. Pre-order at Phish Dry Goods. Here's a detailed press release:

Round Room, Phish’s tenth studio album, will be available on vinyl for the first time on February 2. It’s available for pre-order now at Phish Dry Goods and will be in record stores. Pick up the Round Room deluxe gatefold package, each individually foil-numbered, with an accordion fold insert with lyrics and photos, and 2-LPs pressed on 180g “Round Room” maroon/stone wax set.

Round Room was recorded at The Barn in Vermont by Bryce Goggin during four days over two weekends in October 2002. The Round Room Sessions were initially intended as rehearsals for the band’s upcoming end-of-hiatus New Year’s Eve Show at Madison Square Garden, giving the recording a loose, live feel with several extended tracks like “Pebbles And Marbles”, “Seven Below”, “Walls Of The Cave”, and “Waves”.

The album was originally mastered by Fred Kevorkian and released by Elektra on December 10, 2002. Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering cut the lacquers for the new 2024 vinyl release.

-ALBUMS- 

01) BOYGENIUS – The Record 

First of all, I never dreamed we would EVER get a full album from this gay girl guitar group (they released a seemingly one-off EP in 2018). Second of all, I never dreamed it would be this good. I’m a bit of an outlier in the Boygenius fanbase since my favorite of the three is Lucy Dacus, but this proves the old saw that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” I suspected this was the best album of the year on first listen, but seeing them live at Red Rocks clinched it. This is a rare moment. Don’t miss out. 

HIGH POINTS: Not Strong Enough, $20, Satanist, True Blue, Cool About It, Leonard Cohen

02) THE NATIONAL – Laugh Track 

The second of two albums they released in 2023, and though the first (“First Two Pages of Frankenstein”) was exceptional, this is the best “alternative rock album” (or “Indie,” or whatever the kids are calling it now) I’ve heard in about 10 years. It’s easy to dismiss this as the “leftovers” album from The National this year, but it is not. It may be the best album they’ve ever made. 

HIGH POINTS: Weird Goodbyes (feat. Bon Iver), Laugh Track (feat. Phoebe Bridgers), Space Invader, Tour Manager, Smoke Detector 

03) DUANE BETTS – Wild & Precious Life 

 

I’m inclined to ignore “legacy” acts, but Duane Betts (son of Allman Brothers Band original Dickey Betts) has apparently been keeping these songs close to the vest until just the right moment, and this is it. Breaking out of the Allman Betts Band (albeit temporarily), he’s corralled an impressive gathering of guests (Derek Trucks, Nicki Bluhm, Marcus King) and yet, proves he can stand on his own.

TELLURIDE BLUEGRASS 2024 ON-SALE CHANGES

Dearest Festivarians,

We're rearing and ready to talk about the Telluride Bluegrass ticket on-sale! Strap down, because we've got a loooong email ahead of us.  

Let's talk about what's going to be different about the process this year.

In order to buy tickets in the general on-sale (December 7th @ 10a MT), you will need to be pre-registered. Let us repeat that for the people in the back: you will need to be pre-registered to buy TBF tickets on December 7th.

This pre-registration process will allow us to screen out known scalpers before they can buy tickets (thus getting tickets only into the hands of true Festivarians!).

Here's how to get pre-registered: Go to shop.bluegrass.com anytime between 12:00p on Tuesday, November 14th and 11:59p on Tuesday, November 28th.
Click “Get Tickets” on the “Telluride Bluegrass 2024 Pre-Registration” event. Note: this is not an actual event!
Select one (1) $10 TBF Pre-Registration “ticket” from the dropdown and proceed through the entire purchase process. Note: this is not an actual ticket!

Why $10? The idea of charging $10 to "pre-reg" is that it will discourage those who aren't fully committed to attending the Festival as well as those who are too committed (aka scalpers) to acquiring tickets to re-sell. We hope that true Festivarians won't mind contributing $10 to offset the carbon footprint of the Festival while achieving these goals.

Going through this process and making the purchase allows us to collect some of your information, specifically email address, shipping address, and the last four digits of your credit card. Having this info will enable us to enforce a couple rules which are: You can only purchase one pre-registration per email address and credit card.
You can only use two email addresses per shipping address.

Once the Pre-Registration window closes on 11/28, our partners at See Tickets will perform a scalper screening and disqualify the email addresses of known scalpers as well as the email addresses of those who broke either of the above rules. On or before 12/6, we will notify you via email letting you know whether or not your email address was accepted. Be sure to check your spam folder.

PLEASE NOTE: pre-registration does not guarantee you tickets to the Festival!

As for the $10 it costs to pre-register, one of three things will happen: If you are accepted and purchase tickets, your $10 will go towards offsetting the carbon footprint of the Festival.
If you are accepted and aren't able to purchase tickets, your $10 will be refunded to the card you used to make the original purchase.
If you are rejected for any reason, your $10 will not be refunded but go towards offsetting the Festival’s carbon footprint.

On the morning of Thursday December 7th, Planet Bluegrass will send an email to all approved pre-registrants with the password which will allow you into the actual Telluride Bluegrass Festival event pages. They will be found at shop.bluegrass.com.

KSUT Public Radio and Tico Time announce a partnership to present the fourth annual Tico Time Bluegrass Festival at Tico Time Riverside Resort in Aztec, N.M., May 17-19, 2024. The leave-no-trace, family-friendly event will include performances by Railroad Earth, Elephant Revival, Kitchen Dwellers, The Lil Smokies, Larry Keel’s Electric Larry Land, Sticks N’ Thorns, and more than 17 other bands.
